Hundreds of free prom dresses, tuxes up for grabs Saturday at Owings Mills library
OWINGS MILLS, Md. —
This weekend, teenagers will be able to go to the Baltimore County Public Library Owings Mills Branch and leave with a prom dress for free.
“It doesn’t look like the library, but it is the library,” said Erica Palmisano, of the Baltimore County Public Library.
The satin, sparkle and sequins came as a community effort. The library asked for donations and people delivered.
“We started collecting prom formal wear, anything from prom dresses, to accessories, to shoes, to tuxes for the boys,” Palmisano said.
They couldn’t believe what they got. From size zero to 24, there’s something for everyone.
“Some of our regular teens, we know them and we know their stories. That’s part of what we do and we know they can’t afford an expensive dress or an expensive tux or even rent one,” Palmisano said.
There are about 1,000 dresses — long and short — and hundreds of tuxes. Some of them still have the tags. Each promgoer will be able to grab an outfit and accessories, so money doesn’t end up getting in the way of going to prom.
The event takes place Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Baltimore ‘American Idol’ Finalist Is ‘Male Beyonce’: Katy Perry
BALTIMORE, MD — “American Idol” finalist Dimitrius Graham is representing his hometown of Baltimore on the hit ABC show. This week he performed “Love Somebody” with Lucas Graham, who joked they should form a boy band called The Grahams.
He wasn’t the only one who saw stardom in his future.
“He’s the male Beyonce, honestly,” judge Katie Perry said of Dimitrius Graham after the duet.
“I’m going to go so far as to say that was the best sounding duet I’ve heard today,” Perry said, lauding the 27-year-old for taking constructive criticism from judges and incorporating it into his performance. “You did not overdo it; it was perfect.”
Judge Luke Bryan said that the Grahams’ duet was the “best thing I’ve heard today.”Subscribe
Added Bryan: “You’re one of the best singers that I’ve ever heard, and it’s so fun watching you put the equation together and learn on the fly.”
Dimitrius Graham will appear this weekend on “American Idol” along with more than a dozen finalists. The public will be invited to vote.
“He was determined to be on ‘American Idol’ a long time ago,” his mom told ABC 2 News when he surprised her at her Windsor Mill home in March to watch the show after not seeing her for a year.
The Baltimore native has had fans cheering him on throughout the series back home, including the leader of the Baltimore Ceasefire movement, Erricka Bridgeford.

3 Franklin Grads Going To National Mock Trial Championship
From Baltimore County Public Schools: Three graduates of Franklin High School are members of the UMBC Mock Trial team that has qualified for one of 48 slots in the American Mock Trial Association’s National Championship.
The Franklin High grads are Sydney Gaskins, a UMBC sophomore and recruitment chair for the school’s mock trial program; Ethan Hudson, a UMBC junior and president of the program; and Thomas Kiley, a UMBC sophomore and the program’s treasurer. All three of them are ‘double-sided’ competitors, meaning they compete as attorneys or witnesses for both the plaintiff and the defense.
Out of more than 700 college teams across the nation, only 48 advance to the mock trial national championship. The National Championship Tournament will be held April 4 – 7 in Philadelphia. UMBC’s A Team qualified by its performance at the national semifinals hosted by the University of Richmond, March 16 – 17.
“Literally half of my top team is comprised of Franklin High grads,” said Benjamin Garmoe, Esq., head coach of the UMBC Mock Trial Team, adjunct instructor at UMBC, and staff counsel at Vernon & Fanshaw. Garmoe said that he goes to Franklin High scrimmages when he can and that he is “blown away” by the work the students are doing at the high school level.
“If I could recruit all the Franklin High School ‘mockers’ to come to UMBC, I would,” he said.

Towson University Student In Top 20 Finalists On ‘American Idol’
TOWSON, MD — A Towson University student is in the top 20 finalists on this season’s “American Idol.” Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, 26, is a singer-songwriter from Catonsville who has been playing piano and singing on the reality TV show that airs on ABC.
“That was a brilliant performance,” judge Lionel Richie said after Harmon performed “Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan on this week’s episode, landing him in the top 20. “You know how important it is when artists can not scream, not holler, just tell the story, and we’re sucked in from the first note.”
The other “American Idol” judges agreed.
“I’m just so beyond moved to see such an incredible, serious musician up there, and I think you are a really important contribution from the universe to music,” judge Katie Perry said: “—and you should never forget that, whatever happens.”
Following that up, judge Luke Bryan credited Harmon — who is also a music teacher — with inspiring him.
